Question Types in TOEFL IBT Reading Section

The followings are some question types in the TOEFL IBT Reading Section:

1. True or false; For example: The following is true …

2. Vocabulary; The question may ask you a synonim or the closest in meaning

3. Term; For example: Which of the following best explains the term …

4. Inference; For example: It maybe concluded …

5. Purpose; For example: Why does the author mention …

6. Paraphrase; For example: Which of the sentences best expresses the highlighted statement?

7. Detail; Such a question asks you specific information

8. Cause; For example: yada yada is because …

9. Reference; For example: Pronoun x in line x refers to …

10. Opinion; Such a question ask you the author’s opinion

11. Insert; Here you are asked to insert a sentence to make a proper paragraph

12. Exception; For example: yada yada except …

13. Classification; Here you are asked to match descriptions with categories. Notice that some descriptions are not used as the number of the descriptions is larger than the number of spaces in the categories.

14. Summary; Here you are to select the most important descriptions. Notice that some descriptions are not used, either because they are not included in the passage or they are minor points.

  1. Knowing lots of languages is fun and very beneficial. Besides Arabic, English & Bahasa Indonesia, I bet you could also speak other local dialects. With your engineering skills, you are a multi-talented person.
